Freedom of Association
The Freedom of Association is American
As we approach its 250th birthday, we believe that America must recommit itself to the principle that freedom of association is a central pillar of our society. American individualism is only part of the story. Americans also associate with one another; we join together and build from the bottom up. Association is American.
Freedom of association allows for bottom-up solutions to take hold. Individuals have ideas; they build support for them and implement them through association with others.
Our Work and Impact
We support projects that demonstrate the value of active association, solving problems in local communities and relieving the pressures on government that can lead to centralized control.
We have long defended freedom of association – from protecting the freedom of student organizations, to donor privacy, to the right to protest, to the protection of anonymous speech, and against government regulation of private speech platforms.
